Больше всего мне нравятся Indian yellow (Insoidoline yellow), Ultramarine blue, Raw sienna, Brunt sienna, Opera pink, Manganese blue, Raw umber, Permanent orange, Cobalt blue, Cobalt teal blue.

When and how did you develop your interest in art? Were you exposed to the art world as a child?

I am very lucky, I was born in artist family my father is illustration Artist and fine artist so I remember when he was drawing his paintings so me and my brother we must need to to take his brushes as our like playing thing, and that time we are very much interested to paint with my father brushes in his painting so from that time we didn’t know but we get we both brothers get very much interest from the early age as 1 year old or maybe 2 year old and that time sometime our father took us to go and participate in the competition and day by day our interest will be develop very easily so our father is the main power inspiration from our childhood so this is the actual main reason by born and the powerhouse atmosphere is the like is the related with art.

What led you to dedicate yourself to this technique?

Actually our father did a lot of watercolor from his student life and he has a lot of interest in watercolor and i saw his watercolor technique from my childhood and that’s why I get a lot of interest from the childhood to do watercolor and when I went to the art college from the first year I am interested to do watercolor and always after the finish our classes I went to near to Godawari river bank where is the A lot of temples Ghat of the river old house, hindu Temples .,that things always inspired me to paint a landscape painting on location in my college days maybe year 1997 was started on location landscape in watercolor. In my student like and I am very lucky I was born in Nashik city which is the very famous for as a pilgrimage City in my city there is a lot things to paint near to river bank and that riverbank we call Ganga Ghat and I went everyday for the sketching and doing a on location watercolor and that’s why I have a lot of interest to do the watercolor because the surrounding things are very inspiring from me that’s why I am landscape painter.

What is the aspect you find the most appealing about watercolour technique?

Specially I feel in the watercolor there is a lot of movement like a life. because when we touch the brush with the colour on the paper and the wash goes everywhere where he get the way and that way we are control as an artist and that moment always getting a different inspiring moment in our artist inner mind., that moment not happened in oil colour or acrylic colour, oil and acrylic i feel very still. that’s why I feel watercolor is alive medium even watercolor we can take everywhere when you want and it’s a very ideal medium to paint on location because in on location that particular atmosphere atmosphere and sun light it’s very quickly change after 20 or 30 minutes and that moment we are able to catch very easily only in watercolor with the speed and after finish the painting we keep suddenly in your portfolio no wait for the dry, so that’s why from the my beginning I love this medium to paint on location and I love to paint watercolor with the overlap on washes on washes so that transparent watches giving me different energy to keep painting more alive using with tonal value.

Are there any artists who left you in awe and inspired you?

From the my college days I was very inspired our city old master late Mr. V. G. Kulkarni and late Mr. Shivaji tupe who ware very famous Indian artists, 25 years ago that time not available internet and other things to learn and explore, so that’s why they both Artist and his paintings always inspire me to do a watercolor.

Have you changed your approach to watercolour over the years? Was there a progression in your technique?

As an artist I am thinking always artist has must need to  change More things in his paintings after some times, it’s actually like a journey if you make a same colourscheme, painting or the style twenty years ago and the today paint same that thing is not good as an as good artist, if artist is involved 24 hours in art  with his mind and see everywhere surrounding things also changed change after sometime, so this is the actually natural thing even in my painting subjects my watercolor painting technique all things are changed after twenty years because I am doing watercolor more than 20 years I use different coloursheme, different moods, different compositions in my each painting this is the actual artist way. I saw many time many artist get involved only in one colour scheme and doing every location or every subject with the same colours and he keep his comfort zone always and that comfort zone is the enemy of good artist this is the my thinking about that.

Do yo agree that there are different ways of interpreting watercolour, beginning with the softest nuances up to the outlines?

As an artist i always think, we must give the good judgement to the each medium, watercolor is the transparent medium and fluency is the identity of watercolor and the actual nature of the watercolor, so that’s why I always keep in my mind I start my watercolor with the a lot of fluency with the big flow of water colour washes and I tried to keep that fluency till end of the painting and then I added some details and just try to keep soul of the location in my watercolor landscape painting. I keep in my mind I have not catch all details from the location I just catch movement, the atmosphere and the mood in my painting and always keep the prominence for the for the dramatic lighting so I just get the impression from the location so I painted my watercolors in impressionist style but on my way drawings, to the most detailed, intensely coloured pictures. Where would you place your work now?

When you decide to paint a subject, what is the most important feature that you want to represent? Which characteristics are you intrigued by? (Colours, contrast, perspective, composition, athmosphere…)

As you know mostly I would like to paint on location watercolor landscape painting so for that I mostly attract to paint location depending on the composition and the atmosphere these two things it’s more important which is the always inspire me to paint on location and I try to catch those things in my painting using with the shade light, after that most important part for me is the sunlight which is the crate drama in my painting.

Is there a recurring element in your painting, as your own distinguishing feature?

Golden sunlight with atmosphere is the main element of my watercolor

When you think of or choose a subject, do you have a rational approach, thinking of shapes and composition, and of the final impact, or are you attracted by the feeling, the athmosphere, the overall essence?

In my painting when I go to the location first of all I check the composition what is the the my main motif and I try to understand positive and negative space and the the space division of my painting related with location, this things it’s more important in the beginning of my painting and then I think about the atmosphere and the lighting. And all things catch it together.

Do you spend time on organizing your painting (studies, thumbnails, sketches) or do you prefer working directly on the paper? What are the steps in your work?

I work directly on the paper, but the drawing and the composition is ready in my mind before the my start if the painting, for the carefully drawing is the very important part in my first step, than light and middle large washes than heavy big large shadows than the details of objects and the figures.

In your technique what importance do you give to drawing? Do you use photos?

Specially i love to work on location, because that location atmosphere heavily works on my mind and than in my painting, but some time so e good location has not good place to seat so I took photo and do the work, but more prominence at plein air, because plein air works give a many lessons in your inner mind, which is you not understand you very easily, but your inner mind work by default when you works on location, some time you feel during the painting in this world only you, location and painting only this 3 things are alive other is nothing, it’s like meditation for me, this thing not happened in studio.

What about your palette, is it always well organized or is it more the kind of an ‘artistically messy’ one?

I need pallette neat and clean and well orgonised for the keep freshness of work.

How many colours are there in your palette and what are your favourites? Do you prefer a basic palette with fundamental colours to mix or a ready to use range of colours?

I used ready to rage of shades like Indian yellow (Insoidoline yellow), Ultramarine blue, Raw sienna, Brunt sienna, Opera pink, manganese blue, Raw umber, Permanent orange, Cobalt blue, cobalt teal blue these are my favourite. I used few my others shades using of this above colours.

What are the biggest problems that a beginner must overcome in order to progress?

In the bigging of the stage, the fear of the watercolor is most big problem to get easy success. Mostly bigger use very small brushes for the landscape need big brushes to catch impression in bold strokes. Biggeners involved in the following to others, not hear inner voice. Must need carefully think on the perfect drawing with perspective, composition and understand the tonal values.

As an artist, do you think in advance about your next work or do you like to improvise, following the impromptu inspiration?

24 hours i involved to think on what kind of work I have to do in the next, it’s a major step for the my painting but this step is the very earliest stage before start the painting. and this early stage giving me more inspiration in my inner soul to paint on the paper and sometime locations also give the a lot of impression and the inspiration to paint the painting actually it’s depend on the situation.

In the watercolour world you are widely recognized as a successful artist. In your professional route did you ever run up against failure, and how did you handle it?

Up down is the way of life, it’s same thing in any art carrier are a lot of up downs. In the country like India has very rare opportunity to live as an artist and rare opportunity to earn as artist. In India struggling period is too long, in this up down just i keep my mind strong and the stable. In the early stage (year 2002 till 2014) i worked as lecturer in the art collage for my bread & butter, earning money for living it’s very tough job in India as an artist, I faced that problem in my early carrier that’s why I took job in the art collage 12 years than, and continually did 4 -5 big solo exhibition in Mumbai in those early stage and than i stable well so I leave the job in 2014, now I am full time artist and happy and have much time to concentrate my painting, family and life. That struggling time I faced a lot problem for the time management and economic stability, but got great support from my parents and kept staible my mind.

People usually think that in watercolour it is impossible to correct mistakes. Do you agree with this statement? Do you think watercolour technique needs spirit of adaptability, and to what extent?

After good experience as an artist, you feel it’s very easy to correct mistake, because you know well how manage, but actually depends on the situation, not each time. Spirit of adaptability needs but it’s depends on how you way to handle your work.

Have you met people in your life who were particularly important for your artistic growth?

Yes I met few great masters, who is my ideal as an artist and as great human being Indian famous artist mr. Vasudeo kamath, Mr. Vijay Achrekar, Mr. Samir Mondal who is amazing master and the same time great human being, who inspired many and me too, Mr. Guwan Wexing, Mr. Liu yi, Mr. Stanislaw Zoladz, Mr. Joe Salminen, Mr. Alvaro Castagnet, those masters also inspired me as artist and great human because we get this kind of combination very rarely.

Do you have a favourite, meaningful painting you’d never leave?

Few on location watercolor are i keep in my collection which I painted in Europe, who gave me great pleasure as plein air work.

One of your most suggestive subjects is Venice. Do you find in it any resemblance with the athmosphere of your country?

In India has lot of subjects available with variety of culture and architecture. Not like Venice but many are great places like Banaras, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bundi, Udaipur, My Hometown Nasik, Hampi, Badami and many others who always inspired me always.

How do you manage the current period, artistically speaking, without face to face classes and meetings?

In this pandemic i took few online classes and concentrate on my Patreon page (www.patreon.com/prafullsawant) where I uploaded each month 4 studio and on location demo for my student who want learn from me from around the world, and it’s good opportunity for me I keep all documentation of my demo at one place which is able after lockdown, this is positive side for me, before that not able to did like that. Now more than 25 real-time demonstration with full instructions available with different subjects and medium like watercolor, Oil colors, Dry Pastel and Charcoal too. Who is interested so please visit that page and join and enjoy the learning at www.patreon.com/prafullsawant.

What about your exhibitions?
